Business Spotlight: Vacuums R Us and Sewing Too

For more than 20 years, Vacuums R Us & Sewing Too has been a hometown mainstay in Arvada. Home to an array of built-to-last vacuums and sewing machines, the store boasts a loyal following. Owner Dina prides her close-knit team on their quick, cash-saving repairs and the strong connection they’ve built with their patrons.

The challenge

After opening a new showroom and warehouse space in Fort Collins, Dina and her small-but-mighty team needed a change in Arvada. Their highly visible location at the corner of Sheridan and W. 80th Avenue – which got new awnings with the help of an AEDA Exterior Improvement Grant in 2022 – felt too large. So, they moved a few hundred feet to the north to a foot traffic-friendly multi-business property just behind the old corner shop. Within a few months, Dina noticed her clientele dwindling.

“There were a few logistical issues that negatively affected our traffic,” Dina said. “We were running into delays putting up our ‘Vacuums’ store sign at our new building, and our ‘We Moved’ signs at the old store were damaged and unreadable. There were also technical issues with Google and Apple maps not updating to our new location. This led to new customers not being able to find us, and our previous customers assuming that we just closed entirely.”

The solution

Dina and her team decided to reach out to AEDA for some help recapturing those drop-in visitors. “My husband Josh had worked with the AEDA team previously and thought they might be able to help with getting the word out that we’re still here, just 30 seconds away from our old store!”

In the end, AEDA was able to lend a hand on multiple fronts. “They kept us updated on the progress of the permit to get the store sign on the building, which was very helpful,” said Dina. “They also helped with writing an article about us in the Arvada Report, which has helped with local outreach.”

Since then, business has begun picking back up again for the store, thanks to the increased visibility and word-of-mouth from the store’s loyal customers.

“We have seen a bit of an uptick in traffic, especially since the new sign went up and customers are more easily able to find our new location,” said Sage, regional manager of Vacuums R Us. “We still hear the occasional, ‘I thought you guys closed, I didn’t realize you just moved!’ comments, but they are becoming less and less frequent as our new location is becoming more and more known.”
