Business Spotlight: Inspired Wellness Center
When Dr. Jana Royer-Morian was a child, she knew one thing for certain: She was destined to be a marine biologist. “I’m Colorado born and raised, but I came out of the womb talking about sharks,” Dr. Jana says. “When I graduated from Westminster High School, I went straight to the University of Hawaii for a degree in biology, and I lived there and did marine research.”
A collapsed roof at a relative’s business back in Colorado eventually brought Dr. Jana and her husband back home to help clean up. The relative – her sister-in-law – was working as an acupuncturist at the time.
“She suggested I get a master’s in acupuncture and come work for her. I started the degree 19 days later,” Dr. Jana recalls. “I actually didn’t like it at first, to be honest. I’m very science-minded, and true Chinese medicine is based on a totally different kind of model, so it was different.”
But after her first clinical rotation in an oncology clinic, she saw the difference acupuncture combined with traditional medicine can make. “That hit home for me, because my family has gone through cancer treatment,” she says. “I never ended up working for my sister-in-law. I decided to go into private practice, and eventually medical school, and become a doctor instead.”
Dr. Jana set her sights on healing a variety of ailments through the combination of acupuncture and Western medicine, opening Inspired Wellness Center in 2007 and moving to Arvada in 2008.
The challenge
Dr. Jana – once a skeptic herself – knew she had her work cut out for her to convince people of the merits of traditional medicine. “I needed to make patients feel comfortable and help them understand that while Western medicine keeps us alive, acupuncture and other kinds of complementary medicine are better at keeping us healthy.”
Her solution was a welcoming, easy-going practice that pairs acupuncture with integrative medicine to treat infertility, hormone imbalance, side effects from traditional cancer treatments, anxiety, pain, and more.
“I’m especially excited about the recent changes in women’s health and how herbal medicine and acupuncture can help women through perimenopause and menopause,” Dr. Jana says. “We’re learning so much all the time about that phase of our lives, and helping support in light of those positive changes is a passion of mine.”
Women’s health is just one area where Dr. Jana sees a gap that her practice can help fill. “We see a lot of people who are frustrated with the current healthcare system and are looking for more individualized care.
“But it can be challenging as a small business owner to make connections with people.”
The solution
For Inspired Wellness Center, AEDA helped make those connections. “You want to be a part of your community and feel like your little business matters,” Dr. Jana says. “Between the Business Appreciation Awards and other opportunities to connect and take advantage of resources, I feel like we have what we need.
“We’re all in this together, and our goal is to create a safe, casual space for people to feel better and live their fullest lives. And there is great support in Arvada for us to make that happen.”
