City of Arvada begins next phase of Ralston Road Improvement Project

The City of Arvada and its contract partner Hamon Infrastructure will begin Phase Two of the Ralston Road reconstruction project on Monday, April 26. This phase of work is expected to last for 24 months and will begin at Yukon Street and progress westward to Garrison Street. The public is invited to join the project team for a virtual open house on Thursday, April 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. for an overview of this second phase as well as the timeline of construction and a chance to ask questions.

Project Background and Description

The reconstruction of Ralston Road is an ambitious two-phase project to widen this important corridor and provide sustainable infrastructure for the area. Phase One of the project which addressed roadway, accessibility, pavement conditions, and aesthetic upgrades from Upham to Yukon Streets is almost complete.

Phase Two, which is funded through a voter approved bond measure, will encompass pavement reconstruction from Yukon to Garrison streets as well as widening, adding safety and drainage improvements, bringing existing curb ramps and sidewalks into ADA compliance, replacing aging traffic signals, and incorporating landscaping to create a vibrant urban streetscape.

Highlights of the project include:

  • Relocate utilities and make drainage improvements

  • Replace aging traffic signals

  • Widen traffic lanes and add safety features

  • Install new ADA-compliant curb ramps and upgrade gutters on both sides of the roadway

  • Construct 8’ detached or 10’ attached sidewalks

  • Add landscaping to create a new urban streetscape

  • Reconstruct pavement on Ralston Road

Coping with Construction

The City of Arvada is committed to preventing traffic flow disruptions when possible and maintaining access to businesses and residences throughout the duration of Phase Two construction. With this in mind, a single lane will be open at all times in both directions of Ralston Road. In addition, access to businesses and residences may be narrowed but will be maintained, as well as access to RTD bus stops. Some lane and intersection closures of arterial roads may exist at certain times during the project with advisories and signage in place to alert motorists and pedestrians to the closures.
